Chrome the Browser

Chrome is a fantastic web browser with many features and settings to personalise its functionality. This allows users to enhance their browser experience and improve their efficiency.

The below settings allow all users, and in particular teachers and students, to take advantage of features the Chrome browser offers.

Bookmarks

Bookmarking web pages on the bookmark bar allows users quick access to regularly visited sites.

To bookmark a webpage you have visited users just have to click the star on the right of the Omnibox. You have the option for the bookmark to sit on the bookmark bar or in a folder with other bookmarks.

*The bookmark bar can become crowded if each bookmark has a title. I recommend removing titles from each and just have the Favicon (website icon) showing. This way you can fit a more bookmarks on your bookmark bar.

Omnibox

Chrome’s Omnibox not only allows users to find URL’s and search Google, but can also perform other time saving tasks.

Add a Search Engine

Any webpage with a search bar can be added as a search engine. This enables the user to search the newly added search engine directly from the Omnibox from any webpage.

To add a search engine;

  1. Right click in the search bar on the webpage
  2. Select “Add As Search Engine”
  3. Choose a ‘Keyword’ (I suggest 1 or 2 letters)

Now when you want to search Google Drive, you can simply type into the Omnibox from any webpage, ‘d spacebar’ and search for the documents you want to find.

Alternatively you can manually add each new search engine in your settings;

  1. Settings
  2. Manage Search Engines
  3. Enter your search engine details

Calculator

The Omnibox can be used as a calculator. Just type in the equation you would like answered. You can then continue to use this calculator feature.

Define

To understand the meaning or pronunciation of a word, type “define” followed by your word into the Omnibox.

Timer

A countdown timer can be set by typing “timer” and the time you would like in the Omnibox.

 Pin Tabs

Pinning tabs to the browser is a great way to keep organised with your most visited webpages. These tabs will always appear on the left of the browser when it is opened. You will notice the tab is smaller, you will only see the Favicon for the Pinned tab.

Right click on a tab you would like to pin, and select ‘Pin Tab’.

Google Sheets Add-ons for Education

Add-ons are tools created by third party developers that enhance the functionality of Google Docs, Sheets and Forms. This allows users access to more features and creative freedom.

You can install an Add-on from ‘Get add-ons’ under the ‘Add-ons’ tab in Google Docs and Sheets.

Here are the Google Sheets Add-ons I have found to be very useful for education.

autoCrat

Screen Shot 2015-04-24 at 5.17.01 pmautoCrat is a mail merge tool that takes data from a Google Sheet and merges it in a personalised Google Doc or another Sheet. This data can be collected via a Google Form or entered manually into a Sheet. Users can map data using <<merge tags>> as placeholders to insert data from the Sheet into their template. autoCrat can be set to run its merge on submission of a Google Form, enabling the template to be automatically populated as a personalised Doc. This newly created Doc can be emailed to the user as a PDF or a view only Google Doc. autoCrat can be used in many different ways including creating certificates, feedback, rubrics, portfolio pieces and letter writing.

EZ Query

EZ Query allows users to manipulate spreadsheet data without having to know how to write any formulas. Users can add numerous filters to columns to sort data in a new sheet. Any additional data entered into the spreadsheet will automatically be sorted by the filters that the user has set up.

Flubaroo

FlubaroScreen Shot 2015-04-24 at 5.00.54 pmo allows teachers to immediately view and analyse assessment results.  Teachers create a Google Form assessment, multiple choice questions work best. Once students complete the Form teachers run the Flubaroo Add-on for the populated Google Sheet to grade the assessment. A new ‘Grades’ sheet is created with an overview of all students results.

  • If less than 60% of students get a question correct, that question is highlighted orange.
  • If students scored less than 70% on the assessment they are highlighted in red.

This allows teachers to focus their teaching at the point of needs of their students. Teacher’s have the ability to email results to students.

Split Names

Split Names separates names in a Google Sheet that have been collected from a Google Form. Names can be split by first, middle, surname and title. This is an easy to use tool to separate students names when they are entered in the wrong convention.

Google Docs Add-ons for Education

Easybib Bibliography Creator

Create a bibliography page from within the Doc. Select and manage citations from books, journal articles and websites. Users have the option to use MLA, APA or Chicago citation style.

Kazeina

Kazeina allows users to add audio comments to a Google Doc rather than typing. Users also have the option to link resources to highlighted text. This is the perfect tool to leave verbal feedback on student work.

Mindmeister

Mindmeister allows users to turn a bullet point list of ideas into a mind map than insert it directly into your Doc. This is a great tool to quickly brainstorm or visualise ideas.

Openclipart

Search more than 50,000 images to insert into your document. All images are free to use, change, modify, even commercially making for an excellent source for student use.

Table of Contents

Create a table of contents in the sidebar to navigate the Doc. When a user clicks on the link in the table of contents it will take you directly to that point of the Doc.

Thesaurus

Find synonyms for selected words in your Doc. Suggestions will be given for synonyms and antonyms. A fantastic quick and easy tool to help students expand their vocabulary.

12 month 1:1 Chromebook Review

Deploying a 1:1 Chromebook program to over 100 Year 5 & 6 students at the beginning of 2014 was very exciting.

Our school was focused on Contemporary Learning practice which is summed up so well by the 5 C’s; Create, Connect, Communicate, Capture and Collaborate. Google Apps For Education (GAFE) is a great enabler of this and was already being embedded into teaching and learning. We knew what students could achieve using the GAFE tools and wanted to increase our fleet of devices to compliment the direction of this school vision.

IIMG_5273n 2013 all classrooms had access to 4 desktops, 3 laptops and shared 6 iPads with a neighbouring class. This allowed students access to the internet and GAFE, but ultimately meant teachers had to design lessons around limited devices.

We believed a 1:1 device program would be the best fit for our teaching and learning paradigm. Our aim was to hide technology in classrooms. We wanted the focus to be taken off the device so it would be seen as just another option the teacher and student had at their disposal to complete assigned tasks.

Exploring device options we looked at increasing our fleet of iPads and Laptops or the purchase of Chromebooks. We trialled 3 Chromebooks and found they met the needs of our students and school vision perfectly. They really are a fantastic device being fully functional from turn on in under 10 seconds, having a battery life of up to 7 hours, and being able to perform roughly 90% of all things we would ask of a PC. With a price tag around $350, they are a very cost effective measure to get devices into the hands of our students. The decision was made and Chromebooks were purchased and planning for implementation begun.

Upgrading our infrastructure was a key priority. Our network was not designed to cater for such a high number of devices. Increasing the wireless strength to ensure the implementation of this 1:1 program went smoothly was completed. This allowed teachers to have confidence in the device always being fully functional so their focus could solely be on teaching and learning.

Enrolling and management of the Chromebooks in the Admin Console is a dream. The fact that settings, policies, and apps and extensions are enforced to each user from their Organisational Unit under Chrome Management means that whether users are signing into a Chromebook or the Chrome browser, their settings are enforced across all platforms. Any changes made to these policies and settings are pushed to the user in 30 minutes as our Policy Refresh Rate is set to the minimum setting. Even better is that any updates the device needs run automatically when the user signs into their account without them even realising.

Screen Shot 2014-12-21 at 10.55.50 amAs the Chromebook is simply the Chrome Operating System, support for staff was focused heavily on the Chrome browser and GAFE tools and not the device. We held Professional Learning Meetings, Techie Breakies, Techie Afternoons, and in class support to ensure lesson design and implementation was transformative. Selected senior students were trained as Tech Wizards to help provide further support to students and teachers to ensure that assistance was always available.

The school vision was to create a Contemporary Learning environment for our students. The 1:1 Chromebook program has allowed this to take place. Students are creating, connecting, communicating, capturing and collaborating with classes all around the world. They are able to log into a Chromebook at school, then when at home log into their account on their home device and continue exactly where they left off.

We could have deployed PCs, Laptops or iPads and the teaching and learning would have still been the priority and support would have all still been focused on the Chrome browser and GAFE. The fact the Chromebook is only $350 and the management of the device is second to none were a bonus.

Looking forward to 2015 we are increasing our fleet of Chromebooks to be 1:1 for all students in Year 3 – 6. We are again excited to see what can teachers and students can achieve with these devices in their hands.

Our 12 month GAFE Journey – From Zero to Hero

At the Melbourne Summit in 2013 St Francis Xavier Primary School was new to Google Apps For Education. Since then they have successfully implemented GAFE for all staff and students in Year 1 – 6 and a 1:1 Chromebook program in Year 5 & 6. Drive, Calendar, Sites, Gmail and Google+ are now embedded into their school culture. In this session Corey will outline how his school is using these tools and the steps and strategies he used to transform the teaching and learning through GAFE.

Implementing Chromebooks in our Schools

The implementation of Chromebooks at St Francis Xavier has opened up a world of new possibilities in Learning and Teaching.  These cost effective devices are designed for the Google Apps ecosystem and are easily managed from the Admin Console.  This has allowed our school to implement a 1:1 program in Years 5 & 6 this year and in 2015 this program will extend to Years 3 – 6. In this session I will introduce the Chromebook and outline how simple it is to enrol the device, set up policies and push out apps and extensions.  This job does not have to be left for your technician. Any teacher with access to the Admin Console will be able to manage these devices.

Google Apps For Education in Physical Education

Google Apps For Education (GAFE) is a suite of powerful applications. The entire ecosystem breathes the key aspects of 21st Century Learning & Teaching qualities; create, collaborate, communicate, capture and connect.

By incorporating the native GAFE tools into my role as a PE Teacher I have developed a more efficient and effective workflow.

Docs 

  • Planning
  • Autocrat Templates (explained in Forms)

I do all my planning in Docs. This is fantastic as it allows me to access the latest version of documents where ever I am and on any device. Being able to access my planning documentation on my iPad or iPhone means I can check lesson details between classes and when on the run. I simply share my planning with the school leadership team so they always have an up-to-date copy and can give me feedback.

I absolutely love Forms. PE Teacher’s are always collecting information from students. This use to mean receiving piles of paper with student information needing to be collated into a manageable format prior to events. Using Forms, I create the template and questions, send out to students, and all responses are presented neatly in a Spreadsheet as soon as submitted. I then manipulate this data to put together start lists, teams etc. Literally saving myself hours!

Having students self assess themselves and their peers is a great way for them to take ownership and independence of their learning. I ask questions aligned with the learning intentions and success criteria for the lesson / unit. I use a variety of scale, checkboxes or choose from a list question types so students have to decide where they sit on the continuum. Students use an iPad to fill in what they believe to be a true indication of the skill performance. Again, once submitted this is instantly sent to a Spreadsheet in my Drive for me to view.

Honest teacher feedback from students is one of the biggest indicators to continually develop and improve teaching pedagogy. Setting up a Form for students to give lesson feedback enables myself to reflect on what I can change, improve, continue to do that engages and gets the most out of the students.

When using Forms, I combine it with the power of Autocrat. Autocrat is a Script that merges cells from the Spreadsheet into a Doc template that is then emailed to the student. All completed instantly when the student submits the Form. This allows the student to have a record of the sports or events they have selected, assessments, or feedback. Depending on the purpose, these Docs can then be used in students blogs and / or portfolios.

Calendar

  • Sport Events

I use Calendar to inform the school community of upcoming sporting events. I don’t actually share this, instead I have embedded it into the PE Blog. Students and families are able to view in agenda form a list of dates of events. When an event is clicked on more details drop down with further information including exact times and venues.

Google Drive App

On each of the PE iPads is the Google Drive app. Any photos, video analysis or work completed by the students can be saved directly to their individual GAFE account. Students can then access these files from any device and complete assigned tasks.

 

These are some ways I have used GAFE in my Physical Education program. The possibilities of what you can achieve is very much up to your imagination. The reduced workload and improved workflow is what make GAFE such a great set of tools.
